Archive for the ‘The Mission’ Category

I intended to start this blog almost a year ago after returning from a fellowship at the American Dance Festival in Durham, N.C. With the 2011 ADF on the horizon, I’m finally getting it going. Check out my entries about the upcoming festival and the new TITAS season below and my mission statement by clicking on the “About” page above.

I also intend to use DFW Dance Blog as an archive of my dance writings since I became the main dance critic of The Dallas Morning News in 2008. So far, I’ve uploaded my unpublished reviews of 2010 ADF performances and pieces that fit into the “Other Archives” category. I should have everything else up, including an updated calendar, before heading to ADF at the end of next week.

Thanks for reading and feel free to comment!

DFW Dance Blog is the creation of Manuel “Manny” Mendoza, who has been covering the arts in Dallas for almost 20 years, first as a staff critic at The Dallas Morning News, now as a freelancer. I continue to write about dance, film and pop music for the News and have contributed arts stories to Modern Luxury Dallas, Art + Seek and THE magazine.

DFW Dance Blog was inspired by three weeks at this last summer’s American Dance Festival in Durham, N.C., where I was a 2010 fellow in the NEA Arts Journalism Institute for Dance Criticism. I came back wanting to make a greater contribution to the understanding of dance as an art form.

While my coverage will not be comprehensive, I plan to map the Dallas-Fort Worth dance scene, focusing on professional, semi-professional and college companies that are creating and performing high-level work; chronicle national and international troupes making tour stops in the Metroplex; and provide links to interesting and informative dance writing elsewhere.

Stay tuned!
